“Twenty years from now you will be disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain
Humans love to seek comfort and order. We love to have things planned out. We love to know what the conditions - what the weather is doing, how long the journey will take and how easy or hard the task may be.
So when we find comfort in life we tend to plant ourselves, even if we’re not fulfilled. Because at least we’re somewhat comfortable, right? 🤔
It’s because we all fear change. Even if we aren’t happy with our circumstances, at least we have a sense of control over the familiar compared to change which presents a world of new possibilities outside our control.
So we wait for a plan… Or some sort of permission in order to move forward towards our future. In your experience, how’s that worked for you? I know for me, this has NEVER worked out.
Here’s what I know to be true about following the call towards the future you wish to create: It’s always exciting in the dreaming phase, but then when the time comes to actually step out and make it happen, you’re going to be met with extreme resistance - internally and externally.
I think every one of us has experienced this when we’ve tried to create something good… Have you? It’s that feeling that fights against us when we point towards the future we wish to create. From my experience, this feeling is a sure sign that you are on the right track, that you’re purposed to pioneer the path.
But pioneering isn’t something that you can plan out. It only happens when you have the courage to step out into the unknown and explore new territories of life.
“Pioneering isn’t something that you can plan out. It only happens when you have the courage to step out into the unknown and explore new territories of life.”
So quit waiting for a plan. No map will take you to where you’re destined to go.
Instead, point towards the future you wish to create and more importantly, the person you wish to become.
Because as soon as you point towards the horizon, as soon as you start talking to the person you’re becoming, life now has meaning. All of a sudden, you’ve created a story - a journey to be undertaken.
You’ll feel the fear that comes with and that elusive questions of whether you’re going to survive the journey - we all do. But you’ll have a reason to get up every morning and an adventure to live!
It’s never easy and it sure ain’t fun every step. There’s storms and times you’ll feel stuck in the valley. But you’ll be living an adventure in real life and that my friend, is pretty damn rewarding.
So know what you want - the future you wish to create and the person you wish to become. Point towards that horizon and start by taking one small step. That’s all you need to do because progress is all that matters - no matter how small or big the steps are.
